ImageNow Terminology
ADF - Automatic Document Feeder
A tray on a scanner that will holds paper and automatically draws in one page at a time into the scanner.
AE – Application Engineer
This individual supports our sales team by designing and demonstrating solutions, using the ImageNow product suite, which solves challenging business operational problems. Issues could involve the use and applicability of document imaging, management and workflow solutions, relational database management systems, client server application architecture, thin versus thick client positioning, and network protocols.
AEX
– Account Executive
This individual promotes the PSI product suite to both commercial and public sector customers. They may manage new accounts, existing accounts, or both. They assist perspective customers with understanding how their operational business issues can be solved through the application of technology.
AIPE – Adrenaline Image Processing Engine
A brand of Kofax software that supports scanning, as well as mage processing filters such as bar code, patch code, deskew, line removal, deshade, and edge enhancement.
AISAT – Advanced ImageNow Server Administration Training
Allow Empty
A template definition attribute that allows a user to link an image without specific field information.
Annotation
A tool that enables users to select, add notes, or even block out parts of an image.
Applet
A component that enables ImageNow to communicate with a host application to gather key data to form the DocKey. The DocKey is then used to link objects to the host application record. It can contain one or more LearnMode templates.
AWST – Advanced Workflow & Scripting Training
Bar code
A labeling method that portrays information as machine-readable, rectangular bar elements separated by
white space. The bars represent a linear sequence in which groupings of the bar elements and white space
form characters. In document imaging, you can use bar codes to encode index data on a document and t
separate documents. There are many types of bar codes, including Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5, and UPC.
Batch
A group of scanned or imported documents.
Batch ID
An acquisition method that captures the batch sequence number from scan time.
Batch Mode
A mode that captures documents and stores them in a local group known as a batch, where it is eventually
uploaded to ImageNow Server and processed based on settings specified in the Capture Profile. During the
creation phase of batch processing, batch mode does not work with an applet like single mode.
Black Overscan Removal
A process that removes the black overscan region returned from black background scanners for binary and
color images.
Blank Page Recognition (Kofax)
An image processing filter that allows the scanner to recognize a blank page based on a file size. Users can
remove a file as large as 74KB. In ImageNow, it is listed as 74000 bites.
Blank Page Recognition (Pixel)
An image processing filter that allows the scanner to recognize a blank page based on a sensitivity setting. These settings range from Pristine, Dirty White, and Very Dirty White to One Line Acceptable.
Border Removal
An image processing filter that crops the black margin around binary pages from an image.
Capture Profile
A predetermined yet adjustable profile that determines what happens to a document once it is scanned. It
can adjust flaws encountered in the scanning process, enable barcode processing, or automatically link a
document.
Connect Strings
A utility that enables ImageNow to capture the data from a terminal emulator host application screen.
Color Dropout
An image processing filter that searches for selected colors within the image and removes it from the image.
Contrast
An image processing filter that sets the degree of tonal separation between the lightest and darkest shades in an image. A higher contrast image has less gray shades between black and white; a low contrast-image has more gray shades. Contrast determines how many gray shades are scanned and density determines the intensity of those shades.
Crop
An image processing filter that cuts off the edges of an image to remove unwanted margins.
CSA - Customer Service Advisor
This individual is responsible for ensuring PSI’s customers are receiving the highest level of attention, satisfaction, and service throughout the support process. As a member of the Product Support Team, the CSA will manage support expectations by ensuring PSI consistently achieves its service level obligations. The CSA will work directly with the Product Support Team, who technically support PSI's document imaging suite of products.
Deshade
An image processing filter that removes unwanted shaded areas from an image.
Deskew
An image processing filter that straightens a crooked image.
Despeckle
An image processing filter that removes unwanted groups of black pixels from an image.
Dilation
An image processing filter that increases characters size on an image. This setting can increase file size, but may provide a higher quality binary image.
DOS Command Prompt
A LearnMode method used with most DOS-based programs.
DPI - Dots Per Inch
A measurement of pixels or dots within one square inch on an image. The greater number of dots, the higher the resolution.
Drawer
A DocKey that is used to separate document images into logical categories.
Drawer Privileges
A category of privileges in ImageNow used after the document has been linked.
DocKey / Index Key
This is data used by ImageNow to index and retrieve captured objects. There are a total of six DocKeys in
ImageNow.
Duplex
A setting that triggers a scanner to scan both sides of a page at the time of scanning.
Edge enhancement
An image processing filter that sharpens the characters on an image which makes the characters easier to
read.
Erosion
An image processing filter that thins characters and reduces file size of an image.
File source
A capture source that allows users to retrieve documents from a file system.
Global Privileges
A category of privileges in ImageNow used before the document has been linked.
GUI - Graphical User Interface
This displays visual elements such as icons, windows and other graphical design components within
applications.
Halftone
A method used to give an image depth and shading by varying the size or density of the dots or pixels on an
image.
Halftone Removal
An image processing filter that removes halftone (varying pixels) from an image background but not the text
during scanning.
Hole Removal
An image processing filter that locates and removes marks that have complete circle form (for example, a
three-hole punch used for binders).
Host Application
A software application typically used in an office environment that stores customer data.
HyperLearn
A LearnMode method used for GUI applications that do not make themselves as accessible to ImageNow.
HyperLearn uses an on-screen character recognition process to gather data from the host application.
IC – Implementation Consultant
This individual deploys and support high-end, Enterprise-wide, document imaging/management software
solutions across our international customer base. They perform all on-site implementation activities
including hardware and software deployment, administrator and user training, business process analysis
and design, and management of the project scope.
Image Enabled
A term that describes that a host application has been learned using LearnMode.
ImageNow Client control bar
The launching point for all ImageNow operations - scanning, quality assurance, linking, and viewing
documents.
ImageNow Link
An email link, or pointer file; that allows users to email image links to other ImageNow users. These links
contain all of the information needed by ImageNow to retrieve a document.
ImageNow Printer Source
A utility that allows users to import documents into ImageNow without having to scan it. By using a Print
button inside a software program, the document will be imported automatically into ImageNow.
Internet Explorer
A LearnMode method used to integrate with web-based applications.
Invert Image
An image processing filter that converts white pixels to black pixels and vice versa on binary (black/white)
images.
ISAT – ImageNow System Administrator Training
iScript
A fully compliant ECMA-262 scripting facility based on the industry-standard JavaScript. iScript is the
scripting component used to build rules-based workflow functionality in ImageNow.
ISIS – Image and Scanner Interface Specification
This is an industry standard interface for image scanning technologies
Item
A base component of workflow. It references a specific document within ImageNow. A workflow item is
routed from queue to queue until it reaches its destination.
Kofax

LearnMode
A utility used to gather information displayed from the host application screens; this data is then used by
ImageNow to store and retrieve scanned and imported documents.
Line Removal
An image processing filter that removes horizontal and vertical lines and repairs overlapping text and
graphics on binary images. The line removal filter can also be configured to reconstruct horizontal and
vertical lines by “redrawing” them straight with smooth edges.
Link
A process of creating an association between captured objects inside ImageNow and records inside a
host application.
Literal
An acquisition method automatically enters static text into an Index Key field.
MDI – Multiple Document Interface
A window with a window that can not be moved outside of the parent window.
Manager
A role within ImageNow privileges. The Manager can do almost everything that the Owner can do within the
system, except promote or demote users to the Manager role. There can be many managers in an
implementation of ImageNow. The Manager can define Users, Power Users, and their privileges in
ImageNow.
Manual Entry
A LearnMode method used to create a stand-alone applet.
Noise
Small black marks on images that are created by dirty scanners.
Noise Removal
An image processing filter that removes noise from binary images.
OCR – Optical Character Recognition
OLE/DDE Script
A LearnMode method used with applications that possess OLE or DDE capabilities. This method allows
users to build VBScripts that access the OLE, DDE, COM, and ActiveX objects for an application.
OSM –Object Storage Manager
An area where ImageNow stores all document objects. Each object is stored in the original format while
each page of a document is stored as a separate object in the OSM.
Overwrite Proposed Key
A template definition attribute that allows users to overwrite the original index keys that were assigned within
the capture profile when linking with the applet.
Owner
A role within ImageNow privileges. The Owner is the top-level user in the system with access to change all
security privileges. Only the Owner can promote or demote users to the level of manager. The Owner
cannot be defined or modified within ImageNow for security reasons.
PDM – Product Manager
This individual works with innovative technology conceptualizing, designing, building, and testing Enterprise software solutions for some of the leading organizations across the globe. PDMs are responsible for every phase of the development cycle including documentation and delivery. PDMs work not only with the development team, but also spend a great deal of time working with sales and implementation team members to ensure that customers’ needs are being met, and that company goals are being reached.
PM – Project Manager
This individual is responsible for project leadership, planning and communication. They provide assistance
to the sales team in determining project scope and complexity. PMs lead and support the implementation
engineers involved in deploying and supporting high-end, Enterprise document imaging/management
software across an international customer base.
PSE – Product Support Engineer
This individual is responsible for providing technical support to our customer base of system administrators
and end-users. Through this support, they are accountable for exceeding the standards of service outlined
in our support and maintenance agreements, and to ensure the highest level of customer satisfaction.
Pages as Attachments
An email feature that enables ImageNow and WebNow users to send documents as an e-mail attachment to
non-ImageNow and WebNow users.
Patch code
An image processing filter that is used to separate one large batch into smaller batches by placing
them between the pages within the batch. As horizontal black bars separated by spaces, these patterns
are placed in the center, top 1/25 of a page. Kofax recognizes six different patterns. They are labeled as 1,
2, 3, 4, 5 and T. Pixel is able to read three of the six patterns. The three are 2, 3 and T.

Power User
A role within ImageNow privileges. This user is assigned some or all of the management privileges by
a Manager or the Owner. Based on the privileges assigned to them, the Power user may be able to add
users, groups, drawers and assign privileges.
ImageNow Viewer
A component used to view images within ImageNow.
Predefined List
An acquisition method that allows the users to manually select a menu item from a predefined list.
Prescan cache
A Kofax accelerator board feature used to increase the scanners performance by temporary storing images
during scanning process.
Privileges
Tasks users have been assigned and designate what they are allowed to perform in ImageNow.
QA - Quality Assurance
A process of viewing each scanned or imported page in a batch and deciding which ones to keep, which
ones to discard, and which ones to rescan.
Queue
A system of electronic inboxes in which workflow items get routed to and from.
Rotation
An image processing filter that rotates images clockwise and counter clockwise.
Route
A process of sending an item to a selected workflow queue.
Scaling
An image processing filter used to change the size of the image without changing the shape.
Scanning Profile
A predetermined yet adjustable profile that specifies scanner settings and controls how documents are
scanned.
Scanner Source
A capture source that allows you to load paper (or other items) into the appropriate scanning device.
Single Mode
A mode that captures documents and immediately indexes them in ImageNow by drawing on the properties
of a LearnMode applet.
Skeletonization
An image processing filter used to reduce characters by using a thinning algorithm that measures the
distances between the median and the edge of a character. It then shrinks the figure to one-pixel-thick
skeleton.
Smoothing
An image processing filter that improves the appearance of an image, reduces file size by removing
fluctuations on characters, and fills in small cavities.
Streak removal
An image processing filter that removes unwanted streaks from an image.
Template
An ImageNow component which is created by defining a host application screen. One or more templates
make up a single applet; each template is created to communicate with a different application screen.
Terminal Capture
A LearnMode method used with terminal emulator and mainframe programs.
Thresholding (Pixel)
An image processing filter that converts color or gray scale pixel to a binary pixel to help increase character
recognition.
Time/ Date
An acquisition method that records the current time and date as part of the DocKey.
TWAIN
An image capturing API for Microsoft Windows and a standard default driver for receiving input from image
scanners. The TWAIN driver is not used when using third party applications such as Kofax, Pixel or
ImageNow.
Unique ID
An acquisition method that generates a unique number for a DocKey field.
User Entry
An acquisition method that is used to receive manual input from the user.
User ID
An acquisition method that automatically enters the name of the user (as known to the ImageNow system)in
the DocKey field.
User Modifiable
A template definition attribute that allow users to modify the index keys after being populated dynamically
from the host application.
User
A role within ImageNow privileges that has no management privileges within ImageNow. This type of user scans documents, processes batches, accesses documents in ImageNow Viewer, links scanned documents to drawers, and uses other features available in ImageNow.
View Filters
A template definition feature that wildcards out index keys for a greater image return when searching with
the view button.
Window Text
A LearnMode method used with some GUI applications that conform to the Windows interface design
guidelines. It is a hybrid between the Window Walker and HyperLearn methods that is used with some
Windows applications.
Window Walker
A LearnMode method used with some GUI applications that conform to the Microsoft Windows interface
design guidelines.
WebNow Link
A URL that is sent to WebNow users via email. These URL’s contains all of the information needed by
WebNow to retrieve a document and display it inside ImageNow Viewer.
Workflow
A component which enables administrators to create a framework of queues which are connected with
automatic or manual routes that simulate the path a document would follow as if it were in an office environment.
Workflow History
A display of history for a workflow item. The history details the queues through which the
item has passed, which users have accessed the item, and the time of each event.
VB Script
A scripting language created by Microsoft. Used in ImageNow to manipulate the collected value before it
becomes a DocKey.
VRS – Virtual ReScan
A Kofax product that inspects multiple points of each document. This inspection enables Virtual ReScan to check and correct the alignment (skew), brightness, contrast, and image clarity to ensure that ImageNow documents are clear and readable.
